Complete renovation and extension of an apartment building in Zurich
The apartment building, which dates back to the 1920s, is characterised by the typical perimeter block development of the Aussersihl district. Today's Aussersihl used to consist largely of undeveloped floodplain west of the Sihl and Limmat rivers, as well as farmland and pasture. In the 18th and 19th centuries, craftsmen, small traders, and workers settled there.
The suburban single-family homes and commercial buildings were replaced in the 1920s and 1930s by perimeter block developments, whose inner courtyards still characterize the district today.
The artwork by Zurich artist Trix Barmettler creates identity and urban added value: a linear graphic depicting an abstract structure adorns the facade on Badenerstrasse.
Following a complete renovation and extension of the building, modern four-room apartments and a spacious maisonette loft apartment with a large roof terrace will be created by the end of 2026.
Two spacious balconies will be added to the facade using lightweight construction, giving each apartment two balconies, one facing the street and one facing the courtyard.
Two commercial spaces will be created on the ground floor and basement. The building opens onto Badenerstrasse with a spacious shop window.
As part of the renovation, the building will also undergo a comprehensive energy renovation and achieve GEAK certification, which exceeds new building standards.
